Outrage at CBFC: Demand for Apology Over Remarks on Padma Shri Namdev Dhasal
Mumbai, March 3, 2025 – The Central Film Certification Board (CBFC) found itself at the center of a major controversy today after a senior officer allegedly stated that he did not recognize the late Padma Shri Namdev Dhasal, an iconic poet and activist. This remark sparked outrage among Bhim Sainiks, Shiv Sainiks, and members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), led by party organizer Vilas Rupawate.
Determined to seek accountability, Rupawate, along with his supporters, arrived at the CBFC office, demanding a direct confrontation with the officer responsible for the statement. However, upon reaching the premises, they were informed that the officer was unavailable. Undeterred, they met with other CBFC officials and handed over a formal letter outlining their demands.
In the letter, Rupawate insisted on a written apology from the officer for the disrespectful remarks about Namdev Dhasal. He emphasized that failure to issue an apology would result in a large-scale protest, following the aggressive style of Shiv Sena and Vilas Rupawate’s leadership. The demand underscored the sentiment that disrespect towards a literary legend and Dalit rights activist would not be tolerated.
Amid the escalating tension, Maharashtra’s senior administrative officer, Govind Mishra, intervened, reaching out to Rupawate via phone. Mishra assured a meeting to address the grievances and find a resolution. In light of this assurance, Rupawate and his supporters left the CBFC premises under police supervision.
The incident highlights the continued reverence for Namdev Dhasal’s contributions to literature and social justice, while also underscoring the political determination of leaders like Vilas Rupawate in safeguarding the legacy of influential figures. The coming days will reveal whether the CBFC takes corrective action or if this controversy escalates further.
