Buddhist Community Stages Massive Protest at Azad Maidan, Demands Control Over Mahabodhi Vihara

Mumbai, February 28, 2025 – Thousands of Buddhist monks and supporters gathered at Azad Maidan today in a large-scale protest, demanding the restoration of Mahabodhi Vihara in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, to Buddhist control. The agitation was fueled by allegations that the sacred site has been taken over by the Brahmin community, sparking widespread outrage across the country.

Call for Government Intervention

The protesters urged the Maharashtra government to intervene, demanding that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issue a formal request to the Bihar government to transfer the administration of Mahabodhi Vihara back to Buddhist monks. They emphasized that the UNESCO World Heritage site is of immense religious significance to Buddhists worldwide and should not be controlled by any external groups.

Leaders and Monks Join the Protest

The demonstration saw the participation of prominent political and social leaders, including Vilas Rupawate (Shiv Sena – Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), labor activist Ramesh Jadhav, along with Pratik Kamble, Ashok Kamble, Sagar Sansare, Siddharth Kasare, Deepak Kedar, Ramesh Gaikwad, and Gopi More. Their involvement highlighted the growing momentum behind the movement. Several Buddhist monks (Bhanteji) also took part, leading the chants and delivering speeches on the need to reclaim their sacred site.

Government Response and Next Steps

Following the protest, a crucial meeting was convened at Mantralaya, chaired by Patankar, the Chief Minister’s Principal Private Secretary. Discussions focused on the demands of the Buddhist community and possible government action. The protesters now await the state’s decision, with expectations of a formal appeal to Bihar authorities.

This protest marks a significant escalation in the fight for Buddhist heritage rights, with community leaders vowing to continue their efforts until Mahabodhi Vihara is restored to its rightful caretakers.
