Sulakshana Pandit Passes Away at 71: Bollywood Loses Its Melodious Gem
Mumbai, November 6, 2025:
Renowned Bollywood singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit has passed away at the age of 71 after battling a prolonged illness. Her demise marks the end of an era that witnessed some of the most soulful voices and graceful performances in Indian cinema.
A Star Born to Shine
Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana Pandit belonged to a family deeply rooted in music. She began singing at the age of nine and made her playback debut in 1967. Her duet with Lata Mangeshkar, “Saat Samandar Paar Se” from the film Taqdeer, became a massive hit and established her as a promising playback singer of her generation.
Her melodious voice soon made her a household name, and in 1976, she was honored with the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Tu Hi Sagar Tu Hi Kinara” from Sankalp.
From Singer to Silver Screen Star
Sulakshana’s charm and talent soon drew her into acting. She made her Bollywood debut in 1975 with Uljhan, opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Her expressive performances and natural grace helped her secure roles in several hit films such as Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar.
She worked with many leading actors of her era — including Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha — leaving behind a strong body of work in both acting and music.
A Love Story That Never Found an Ending
Sulakshana’s personal life was marked by a tragic love story. During the filming of Uljhan, she fell in love with Sanjeev Kumar, but fate had other plans. Sanjeev was in love with Hema Malini, who turned down his proposal. When Sulakshana expressed her feelings to Sanjeev, he was unable to reciprocate.
Heartbroken, Sulakshana never married and gradually distanced herself from the film industry. After Sanjeev Kumar’s untimely death in 1985, she went into depression and chose a life away from the spotlight.
In a heartbreaking coincidence, Sulakshana Pandit passed away on November 6 — the same date Sanjeev Kumar died 40 years ago.
Tributes Pour In
As the news of her death spread, tributes poured in from across the film fraternity. Celebrities, musicians, and fans remembered her as one of the most soulful voices of Bollywood’s golden era.
Her songs and performances continue to live in the hearts of millions — a true reminder of the timeless legacy of Sulakshana Pandit.
May her soul rest in peace.
