A devastating stampede during a religious festival at a prominent temple in Karur district has claimed several lives and left numerous devotees injured, marking one of the most tragic incidents during this festive season.
The incident occurred in the early hours when thousands of devotees had gathered for the annual temple festival. According to eyewitnesses, the stampede began when a sudden surge in the crowd created panic near the main entrance.
"I saw people falling over each other. There was complete chaos," said Meera, a devotee who witnessed the tragedy. "People were screaming and trying to help, but the crowd was too dense to move properly."
Local resident Raj Kumar, who was among the first responders, described the scene: "When we heard the commotion, we immediately rushed to help. Many people were trapped under others. We formed human chains to pull people out safely."
District Collector Priya Sharma confirmed that rescue operations began immediately after the incident was reported. "Our priority was to ensure medical aid reached the victims quickly. We mobilized all available ambulances and medical staff," she stated during a press briefing.
The temple management, led by head priest Venkatesh Iyer, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. "This is an unprecedented tragedy during our sacred festival. We are cooperating fully with authorities to understand how this happened," Iyer said.
Police Superintendent K.S. Reddy announced that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the stampede. "We are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to understand the sequence of events," he reported.
State authorities have announced compensation for the families of victims and free medical treatment for the injured. Chief Minister's office issued a statement promising stricter crowd management protocols for future religious gatherings.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for better crowd control measures during religious festivals, especially in Tamil Nadu where such gatherings attract massive participation from devotees across the region.
